Swimming Pool Solar Heating

PIWIS SWIMMING POOL SOLAR HEATING MattsPIWIS SWIMMING POOL SOLAR HEATING is a low cost alternative to heating your Above or Inground swimming pool throughout the Summer months.

If you are completely honest you have to admit that in our latitudes, open air swimming pools only reach a pleasant temperature for a few days a year. Installing a Piwis system will enable you to increase your pool temperature to a pleasant level that will result in you enjoying and using your pool more than ever before, and what’s more, it’s free.

If you are an existing pool owner who already has a swimming pool heater in some form or another and are fed up with paying excessive utility bills then utilising the sun’s energy for free is an ideal alternative. Piwis solar heating can be attached to any existing filtration plant. What better way is there than using the sun’s energy to heat your pool.

There’s nothing simpler than installing the Piwis Solar system. It can be assembled by any DIY enthusiast.

The self-assembly Piwis solar matting is supplied in rolls of 12m, 9m, 6m, 3m x 224mm lengths that are pre-fitted to the plumbing manifolds.

A plastic locking clip simply connects each plumbing manifold together. Installation can easily be achieved in a day including plumbing & filtration connections.

Your Questions Answered

How does Piwis heats up your pool?

By simply passing filtered pool water through strips of E.P.D.M quality P.V.C Solar Matting that is heated by the sun’s rays. The matting is pre-fitted to P.V.C Manifolds that are connected to each other. The manifolds must be plumbed directly to the filtration plant. The amount of Piwis you require will depend upon the size of your pool. (see chart for details)

Where is the best place to install the Piwis Solar System?

Piwis can be installed almost anywhere - on the roof of your house, garage, porch, summer house, pergola or directly on the lawn. The only important requirement is a sunny place i.e. south facing to ensure maximum heat absorption.

Under normal conditions you need to use only half the surface area of your pool as the collector surface i.e. a 30 x 15’ pool is 450 sqft, therefore approximately 225sqft of Piwis matting is required. For south-east and south-westerly facing positions in cooler climates the Piwis matting should be increased by 35-40%.

How would I fix Piwis to a roof?

By making a timber framework using wood batons that you can attach the Piwis to. Piwis roof clips are available for this purpose. Always consult a recommended building company if you are in any doubt on how to fix the Piwis to your roof.

Alternatively, an adhesive (available from your pool dealer) can be used to secure the matting to either tiled, asphalt or fibreglass roofs.

If I fix the Piwis to the roof will my filtration be able to cope?

This will depend on how far and high up the Piwis is to be installed. Check with your pool dealer to ascertain your current flow rate as it may be necessary to purchase a separate ‘booster pump’.

Can I shorten or cut the Piwis i.e cut an 9m matt into two 4.5m runs?

Yes. A ‘short run kit’ (2 x manifolds) is available that enables you to cut the Piwis matting in half and rejoin.

How long will it last?

Providing that you contain good chemical balance Piwis should last approximately 10 years +

What temperature rise should I expect?

There are no given measurements for the Piwis Solar System as it relies purely on the energy produced by the sun. On a hot sunny day providing the pool is covered with a solar cover, you can expect a temperature rise of 5-10 deg.F

Can I walk on it?

No. Piwis is not designed to take heavy foot traffic.

Is the matting repairable?

Yes. A repair kit is available from your dealer.

What happens to the Piwis in the winter?

Simply disconnect the plumbing from the Piwis and drain the solar matt to protect from frost damage.

Is this a new product in the U.K?

No. We have been selling Piwis in the U.K since 1981.

Can I add more Piwis matting in the future?

Yes. Just connect more manifolds, although you will have to make an alteration to the plumbing.

What other costs are there to consider when purchasing Piwis?

Allow in your costings for purchase ABS/P.V.C plumbing that will be required to connect the Piwis to the filtration plant. Pipework is normally supplied in 3m or 5m lengths, have your pool dealer give you a price for pipework and fittings. Do not be tempted to use Osma Waste Pipe.

Piwis Optional Pumps and Sensors

PIWIS BOOSTER PUMP

If you are unable to install your solar system near the pool or filtration plant a separate ‘Booster Pump’ can be installed to pump your pool water independently to the solar system.

PIWIS BOOSTER PUMP

PIWIS SOLAR CONTROL SENSOR

If a Booster Pump is to be installed on your solar system it is worth investing in a Control Sensor that will enable you to gain the optimum heat energy available from the sun.
A Control Sensor is an electronic thermostat that will operate the Booster Pump when solar heat is available. In the event that there is no solar heat i.e. after dusk the control sensor will turn off the Booster Pump.
